A recent survey of the ancient yew tree immediately outside St Mary's south door, believed to be at least 2000 years old, has revealed that the posts supporting it are no longer sound enough to safely carry its weight.
As there is a risk of large branches breaking off in high winds posing a serious threat to people using the footpaths to the church, the tree and the immediate area have been fenced off while urgently needed remedial work is carried out. Unfortunately this means the main path is closed except for access to the side door of the church – The Priest's Door. The side paths are open for use as normal.
The cost of the work involved is estimated at £6,000, an expense that will stretch our very limited resources. Because of this we are mounting a national “Save Our Ancient Yew Tree” campaign through JustGiving the online organisation dedicated to helping charities and other causes to fund-raise.
